General Notes: Husband - Clayton S. Bell


He grew up on his father's farm and received his early education in the public schools of Washington Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. He was graduated from North Washington Institute in 1912 and began his business career with the Pennsylvania Railway Company. In 1916 he entered the employ of the Butler Bolt & Rivet Company at Butler. He enlisted for service in the World War on December 13, 1917, and was sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio, as a member of the Three Hundred and Twenty-third Field Artillery, One Hundred and Fifty-eighth Brigade, Eighty-third Division. He went to France in June, 1918, and participated in several important engagements of the war, including the battle of St. Mihiel and the Argonne and Meuse drives. He later was in Germany with the Army of Occupation and was discharged on May 25, 1919. Mr. Bell then went with the Standard Steel Car Com­pany and in 1921 entered the employ of the Ruff Shoe Company at Butler as a clerk. In 1923 he removed to Chicora, where he became successful as a shoe dealer. He served as postmaster beginning July 1, 1926. He was a Republican, a member of the Lutheran Church, and belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
