General Notes: Husband - Nathaniel Patterson

The first of this Patterson family was the American ancestor, Nathaniel Patterson, who was the son of John or James (it is not certain as to which name is correct), who with his brother came to America and settled in Virginia before 1729.

Of Scotch-Irish descent, he came from Campbell County, Virginia, married and, removing to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1758, settled in Mifflin township. He was accompanied by his sons and with their aid erected a log house and began clearing a farm. Soon afterward the Indians became hostile and for safety's sake the family returned to Virginia, where they remained two and a half years. They then returned to the Mifflin township, Allegheny County, home, which they found standing intact, the Indians having passed it by. There Nathaniel Patterson and his wife lived until death, both members of the Lebanon Presbyterian Church.

He accompanied General Washington to western Pennsylvania when he made his first perilous trip across the mountains with a surveying party. He was an assistant surveyor to Washington in that expedition, and aided in establishing the original survey in the vicinity, at the time Washington discovered and reported to the government authorities of Virginia the importance of building a fort at the "Forks of the Ohio," in 1755. The French and Indian war coming on, the party was compelled to return to Virginia and get ready for the conflict. After the close of the war, or about 1760, he returned with his family and settled near the later location of Dravosburg, in Mifflin township, Allegheny County, where he eventually died. [MAC I, 201]

He and his wife were the parents of six children.
