General Notes: Husband - George A. Chalfant


He was educated in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and attended Jefferson College, from which he graduated in 1861. He was subsequently employed as clerk in the office of Spang, Chalfant & Co., and in the course of two years was promoted to the position of superintendent and general manager of the works. At the time he took charge the business employed three hundred men; eventually it employed eight hundred. Mr. Chalfant was the first to utilize natural gas in the county.
