He was reared on his father's farm and attended the common schools of his native township. Attaining his majority he engaged in farming and stock-raising.
He owned and resided on a farm of two hundred and forty-nine acres in South Huntingdon township. He and his wife were members of the Sewickley Presbyterian church. He was a member of Mendon Lodge, No. 276, Jr. O. U. A. M. and Mendon Grange, No. 855, P. of H. He was a republican and an active worker. Mr. Hunter was president for some years of the Sewickley Fire Insurance company which was chartered in 1881 and whose field of operations embraced Westmoreland county, Elizabeth township, Allegheny county; and Perry, Lower Tyrone and Bullskin townships, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
