General Notes: Husband - George Weddell

He received such education as was furnished by the local public schools of that period. He was reared to agricultural pursuits and was engaged in them for more than half a century. In his early manhood the current of Mr. Weddell's life was diverted by the upheaval of the Civil War. On September 4, 1861, he was mustered into service as a member of the One Hundred and Fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and during his period of military life served under Corps Commanders French, Sickles and Hancock. He was promoted to corporal July 1, 1862, and he received a bronze medal for gallantry on the field at the battle of Chancellorsville, May 5, 1863; General Sickles presented the medals. He participated in twenty-seven battles, including Fair Oaks and Gettysburg, and on September 3, 1864, received an honorable discharge. Mr. Weddell long had in his possession the canteen which he carried through his three years of service and was also the owner of a walking-stick which is invested with the interest of having been cut on the field of Gettysburg. These two historic relics he prized as only an old soldier could and should be numbered among the precious possessions of his descendants. On his return home Mr. Weddell took up his abode on the farm which his father had purchased in Irwin. In 1868 he caused all the old buildings to be taken down and replaced with new ones, and in 1873 he erected a house with all the modern improvements. By his energetic management and progressive methods he brought the estate, which comprised one hundred and sixteen acres, up to a high degree of efficiency, devoting it to general farming and stockraising. During the more than fifty-three years of his residence there he always kept pace with the times.
In politics Mr. Weddell was a Republican and for three years held the office of postmaster of Rillton, but neither this nor any other public position was ever sought by him in any way. For twenty-six years he occupied a seat on the board of school directors and frequently served on election boards. Mr. Weddell was one of the promoters of the First National Bank of Irwin, and from the organization of the institution in 1888 continuously served on the board of directors. He was one of the originators and promoters of the Irwin and Herminie Traction Line, and was a director of the Irwin and Herminie Traction Company. He belonged to Captain Marchant Post, No. 190, Grand Army of the Republic, of Irwin, and was a member of the United Brethren church of Herminie, serving from its organization on the board of trustees. For forty years he was active in the work of the church and Sunday school, and frequently acted as a delegate to church conferences.
