He came with his parents in 1835 to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and followed farming a few years, giving some attention at the same time to the trade of carpenter and joiner; he finally adopted these trades as a permanent business in connection with coopering.
He served his township in many of its offices, and filled multiple terms as Justice of the Peace. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. and S. of T. In politics he was a stanch Republican.
