General Notes: Husband - George Neely Berlin

After marriage, he moved to the site of Valley post-office, living at first in a log-house ten by twelve feet. The farm at that time was all woods but three acres. In 1849 he built the brick building in which he kept hotel for many years. In 1856 he had the contract for carrying the mail from Warren to Franklin, using twelve horses and six men. Mr. Berlin was engaged in the oil business since the first excitement about Oil Creek and Oil City. His first adventures did not prove profitable. He devoted most of his time to testing territory, but found no oil. In 1872 he had a test-well drilled on his own farm at Valley. He was subsequently interested in the locality of Elk City, and was one of the first persons to open the Cogley field. He profited by his early experience in the business, and in his late years operated quite extensively and with much success. The Kossuth post-office was moved to his place during Buchanan's administration, and Mr. Berlin was postmaster. He was later postmaster at Valley, an office kept at his place. He sold farm machinery for twenty-five years. [HCC 1887, 648]

In 1848 he came to Elk town-ship, Clarion county, Pennsylvania, and clear-ed a large farm, which he had acquired. Here for a time he kept a hotel, and during this period he built a brick house. In 1856 he had the contract to carry the mail between Frank-lin and Warren, a service which required twelve horses and six men. For a long time he was in the oil business, and he was one of the first to operate in the Cogley field. At one time he had about thirty producing wells. For some years he was postmaster at Valley, an office kept at his place. For twenty-five years he was in the sale of farm machinery. He was owner of three farms, besides his home place of two hundred acres. Throughout his life he was very active and industrious, and in oil producing especially was very successful. [GPHAV, 581]

He died July 27. [GPHAV, 700]
He died July 21. [GPHAV, 929]
