General Notes: Husband - John Cook Berlin

He was brought up on a farm, received a common school education, and also attended Carrier Seminary, Clarion, Clarion County, PA. Engaging in the production of oil he opened the first well in the Cogley field. He was one of the early settlers of Fern City, Clarion County, where he remained about six years. During this time he was a hardware merchant. He then came to Knox, Clarion County, where he has since resided. Here he was one of the organizers of the Clarion County Bank, and active in its reorganization as the Clarion County National Bank. He held the offices of vice-president and director in this bank. He was interested in the other bank, also. He was a member of the firm of B. A. Kribbs & Company, at Knox, where they had a general store, of which he had charge, and did an ex-tensive business. Mr. Berlin was actively interested in the production of oil and gas. Several farms which he owned produce oil or gas, and he was a stockholder in several oil and gas companies. One of these companies drilled forty wells. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, and of the Knights of the Maccabees. While not a seeker for public office he held several local offices. He was a Democrat. His church was the Lutheran. [GPHAV, 581]

He was educated in the public school and at Carrier Seminary, in Clarion, Pennsylvania, where he was a student from 1876 to 1879. His association with the Pennsylvania oil and gas industry, was continued through the firm of Berlin & Son, which also had interests in oil wells in Ohio, Illinois and Michigan. In addition to this connection, Mr. Berlin was president of the Edenburg Oil & Gas Company; president of the Clarion County National Bank, and vice-president of the Rural Telephone Company, operating in that area. He was also treasurer of the Union Cemetery Association at Knox, where he made his home. Although his interests as a successful oil producer and an executive in other enterprises made heavy demands upon his energy and effort, he found time to meet the responsibilities of good citizenship and to give his active support to the institutions of his community, county and state. He was a prominent Lutheran layman and was a member of the state Young Men's Christian Association for many years. He was affiliated fraternally with the Knights of the Maccabees and Knights of Pythias and was a member of the Knox Gun Club. In politics he was an independent Democrat.
