General Notes: Husband - Charles Beswick

He came to the United States in 1860. In connection with his brother he purchased a farm between Manor and Penn Station, Pennsylvania, which they sold to the Westmoreland Coal Company. About 1876 he retired from active labor and lived in Manor. He was at one time treasurer of the borough, elected on the Democratic ticket, though himself a Republican. For fifty years or more he belonged to the Methodist Episcopal denomination, during that time held nearly every office in the church and was often a delegate to conventions of that body.

He was born on Gillot's farm, Lancashire, England. He was but three years old when his father died, and as the family was in very straightened circumstances he was obliged to begin work to assist in their support before he was seven years of age. He obtained employment in the mines and continued at that sort of labor until 1854, when he decided that Australia offered better opportunities to a young man than his native country. His voyage from England to Australia was made in a sailing vessel and occupied one hundred and seventeen days. He located in Ballerette, Victoria, and engaged in prospecting for gold. He remained in Australia for about two and three-quarter years and then returned to England where he had left his family, arriving there in December, 1857. He then engaged in the grocery business until 1860, when he, with his entire family, emigrated to the United States, where his brother George had preceded him in 1848. He located in the borough of Manor, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and purchased a farm, which he cultivated with the assistance of hired help. He entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Gas and Coal Company as a miner and continued with them for seven years. At the end of this period he accepted a position with the Westmoreland Coal Company, with whom he also continued for seven years. He then sold his farm to the Westmoreland Coal Company and retired from active business life, settling at Manor. Two years after Mr. Beswick emigrated to America his mother, and sister Ann, wife of Joseph Taylor, also came and settled in Pennsylvania. Mr. Beswick was a Republican. He served as treasurer of Manor. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he has held the offices of trustee and steward. At the age of sixteen years he signed the temperance pledge and faithfully kept it all his life.

He and his wife had eight children, of whom but one was living in 1906.
