General Notes: Husband - Capt. Jacob J. Bierer

Latrobe, Westmoreland Co, PA

He was educated in the common schools. At an early age he learned the carpenter’s trade, went into business for himself and erected many of the older buildings of Latrobe. He owned the paper-mills at that place, but during the latter years of his life was engaged in the insurance business. At the outbreak of the civil war Mr. Bierer gave evidence that he had inherited the martial spirit of his ancestors. He was made captain of Company C, Eleventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served through the war with distinction, participating in the battles of Cedar Mountain, Rappahannock Station, (three days), Thoroughfare Gap, second Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Mine Run and many minor engagements. At the second battle of Bull Run he took his company of fifty-nine men into action, and came out severely wounded and bringing with him but twenty-three of his command alive. Of these only seven were not wounded. Mr. Bierer served for three successive terms as mayor of Latrobe, and for two terms as a member of the legislature—1884-1885, 1892 and 1893. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and a Knight Templar of high degree. In politics he was a Democrat, and in religion a Lutheran of inflexible loyalty.

General Notes: Wife - Catharine Hugus Bott

She was of French ancestry and was distantly related to the celebrated poet and novelist, Victor Hugo.
