He attended the public schools of the district, and after completing the courses therein taught, took a course at Duff's Business College in Pittsburgh, PA. He then returned to the home farm and conducted it for his father for many years, eventually becoming its owner. He devoted the farm to general agricultural purposes, including stock raising. He was a Democrat in politics, served six years as supervisor, was a member of the board of trustees of Round Hill cemetery, and both he and his wife were members of Round Hill Presbyterian Church.
