He grew up on his father's farm and received his education in the district schools. After several years spent in farming he became interested in the oil fields of Butler, Armstrong, and Lawrence Counties, Pennsylvania. He came to Slippery Rock in 1902 and spent the following eight years in the hardware business. He then was appointed superintendent of the Slippery Rock Water Company and served in that capacity for over fourteen years.
He was a Republican and served as a member of the City Council and as president of the local school board for sixteen years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
