He learned the millwright trade when a young man, later going into the oil business as a producer. He operated extensively in Butler and Armstrong counties, owning and operating his own equipment, and was active in this work in Butler County, near Petersville, one of the pioneers in the business. He was a Republican and a member of the United Presbyterian Church.
