He was born in the county Down, Ireland, about 1813, and was but six years of age when he first saw American soil. Here he received a finished education and was an ambitious youth, who educated himself. He was president of Franklin College in Harrison County, Ohio, and was vice president of Monmouth College, of Monmouth, Illinois. He was prominently identified with educational interests of the state of Illinois.
