General Notes: Husband - William McDowell

The ancestor of the McDowell family in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, he emigrated to Pennsylvania between 1714 and 1717, and settled in Chester County. About 1735 he removed to the Conococheague Valley and obtained a warrant for a plantation at the foot of Parnell's Knob, in what is now Peters township, Franklin County. Here he lived in peace and comfort with his large family until the beginning of the French and Indian War, after Braddock's defeat in 1755. As his sons reached manhood they settled on farms in the neighborhood, some of which were occupied by descendants of the pioneer down to the present [1905] generation. Because of the Indian forays of 1755-56, Mr. McDowell fled to the Susquehanna, and died there, at Wright's Ferry, his remains being interred in the graveyard of Donegal Church, in Lancaster county. [BAFC, 80]

He was born in Ireland, coming to America in the early part of the eighteenth century and settling first in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In about 1731 he removed to Lancaster County, a part of which later became Franklin County, where he became the owner of an enormous estate, Parnell, upon which a fort was established. He was king's magistrate for that part of the country before the revolution, being arbiter in all disputes between varying sects and between the colonists and the Indians. After having been King George's confidential man, he became a Whig at the outbreak of the war and was a most ardent patriot. He continued in the capacity of recruiting officer for the colonies, and was a man of great prominence in that part of the country which prior to 1784 was embodied in Cumberland county. It was from this section that many members of the McDowell family and their descendants went forth to serve their country in various ways and helped to make its history. William McDowell had to flee his estate finally on account of Indian troubles. [GPHAV, 369]

He died Feb 17, 1782. [GPHAV, 369]
