His school privileges were limited to three months' attendance in the winter season, for his services were needed on the home from the time of planting in the early spring until after the crops were harvested in the autumn. In 1875, he purchased a farm in the northern part of Beaver township, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, but he also operated the old homestead.
