He was descended from Robert and Eleanor Elder, who came from Lough Neagh, in Ireland, to Paxtang, Pennsylvania, about 1730.

He is descended from Robert and Eleanor through their eldest son, Robert. (But other sources leave no room for this...)

He was the grandson of Robert Elder, the immigrant, and Eleanor, his wife. He settled in Path Valley with his wife, Mary, where he died.
