General Notes: Husband - C. T. Bordwell

He owned and operated a large manufacturing plant in Freehold township, Warren County, Pennsylvania. This plant was purchased by him in 1885 and contained grist, shingle and planing mills. After coming into his possession it was thoroughly remodeled and became one of the most complete plants of its kind in the country. Previous to its purchase Mr. Bordwell was engaged in mercantile business at Bear Lake. In 1868 he ceased working at the carpenter trade, which had occupied his attention after the close of the Civil War, and invested his earnings in a store at Bear Lake, carrying an assortment of general merchandise. After operating this store very successfully for a period of fifteen years he sold out in 1883, but after a two years' vacation he was back in harness at the old store, where he remained until 1887, when he purchased the mill property.
He was born in Freehold, Warren County, Pennsylvania, and was instructed in the public schools of his native township. He then began working by the month in a sawmill and was in the employ of the Jefferson Lumber Company until the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1864 he enlisted in the 15th Reg., N. Y. Eng. Corps, and participated in the conflicts of Petersburg and Hatcher's Run, serving until the close of the war.
Later, he was a member of the National Guard of Pennsylvania for eleven years, as sharpshooter all that time. He served as lieutenant for five years, and during the troubles at Homestead was on duty 95 days. He was independent in politics and served as justice of the peace for eight years. Socially, he was a charter member of the Sylvia Lodge No. 1025, I. O. O. F., and was also a member of the J. G. Andrews Post No. 70, G. A. R. He was postmaster at Bear Lake for twenty consecutive years.
