WILLARD BOWDEN
Former New Castle resident and Eastbrook schoolteacher Willard M. Bowden of South Euclid, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb, died on his 89th birthday, Oct. 1, 1997.
Born in Grove City in 1908, he was a son of Elvin C. and Elizabeth Lusher Bowden.
He married the former Margaret Jameson on June 8, 1938. She died on Sept. 4, 1988.
Mr. Bowden grew up in Eastbrook and was a graduate of Slippery Rock University. He taught math and science at Eastbrook High School from the late 1930s through 1943, when he took a job with Alcoa in New Castle. He was transferred to Cleveland in 1946.
When living in this area, he belonged to Eastbrook Presbyterian Church and Eastbrook Grange.
After moving to Ohio, Mr. Bowden taught math at the Mayfield City School, Mayfield Heights, until retiring in 1970. He then became an elementary school crossing guard for 15 years.
Active at The Heights Presbyterian Church, he was an elder, deacon and Sunday school teacher. The Bowdens guided a youth group at the church when they first became members.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet Bowden of Cleveland and Marilyn Peckinpaugh of Moreland Hills, Ohio; two grandsons; and relatives in Lawrence County, including brothers-in-law, Joseph and David Jameson, and their families.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother, Alice Cotton and Clarence Bowden.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Maher-Melbourne Funeral Home, 4274 Mayfield Road, South Euclid, Ohio. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens.
