He was a merchant in Mercer, Mercer County, PA, a justice of the peace at the time of his death, and at one time a candidate for the Legislature.

He was born in Scotland and came to this country in his early youth. He kept a general store in Mercer, PA, and was actively identified with the affairs of the town. He was very active in the building of the First Presbyterian Church of Mercer but only lived to see its walls completed up to the "square." It is said that his death was caused by exposure connected with this building. He was one of the very first in Mercer to abolish the practice of keeping upon the counter of his store a wooden pail containing whiskey from the side of which hung a tin drinking cup; every customer was expected to help himself - and did; it was urged upon him that he would lose his trade if he departed from this usage, but he firmly adhered to his purpose and results soon demonstrated the harmony of the community with his advanced views upon the vicious practice.
