He and his sister Ann lived on the home farm in Franklin township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Neither of them or either of their other brothers were married. They were passionately fond of children and their house was always full of children, neighbors and friends. They were known through the surrounding country for their acts of charity. They reared four orphan children.
