General Notes: Husband - Hugh Henry Brackenridge

He was born near Campbellton, Scotland, the son of a poor farmer, who emigrated to America in 1753. He earned his way through college, and was graduated from Princeton in 1771. After teaching five years, he entered the field of journalism, and for some time was editor of The United States Magazine, of Philadelphia. He studied theology, and during the Revolutionary War acted as chaplain in the army. After being admitted to the bar in 1781, he opened a law office at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was interested and active in the political controversies of the time, and during the famous "Whiskey Insurrection" of 1794 was a strong advocate of a peaceable adjustment of the difficulty. In 1799 he was made judge of the supreme court of Pennsylvania. "The Rising Glory of America," which he wrote in conjunction with Philip Freneau, while at college, was published in 1772; "Bunker Hill," a drama, in 1776; "Incidents of the Insurrection in Western Pennsylvania," in 1795; "Eulogium of the Brave who fell in the Contest with Great Britain," in 1778; "Modern Chivalry, or the Adventures of Captain Farrago and Teague O'Reagan, his Servant," in 1796; "Gazette Publications Collected," in 1806; and "Law Miscellanies," in 1814.
