General Notes: Husband - Gen. Hugh Brady

He was born at Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, in 1768, entered the United States army in March, 1792, and served with General Wayne on his western expedition after the defeat of St. Clair. He was appointed a lieutenant in February, 1794, and captain, January 8th, 1799. He afterward left the military service and went to Indiana County, and while a citizen in 1809, was a candidate for sheriff. Subsequently he rejoined the army, and was appointed colonel in June, 1812. He displayed great courage at Chippewa and other battles on the frontier. He was brevetted brigadier general July 6th, 1822, and major general, for long and faithful services, May 30th, 1848.

The township of Brady, in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, was named for him.

He was an educated kind-hearted gentleman and lion-hearted officer, who fought under the "mad" Wayne, and of whom his friend and admirer, Gen. Winfield Scott, said, "God never made a better man or a better soldier." The lines from the poem of Rev. George Duffield, of Carlisle, written on the occasion of his death, might apply equally to others of the Brady family:
"And manly eyes may weep to-day
As sinks the patriot to his rest;
The nation held no truer heart
Than that which beat in Brady's breast."
