He is a lineal descendant of the Bradys, who are famous in history. He was brought up on a farm, and attended winter schools until he reached the age of seventeen, when he hired with J. R. McCall to learn the carpentering and joiner trade, serving a full apprenticeship with him, and after that remained two years longer doing journey work. In 1848, he migrated to Brookville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, where he followed his vocation two years, then started for Pittsburgh in search of work and to see the country. He found employment there in boat building, assisted in the erection of a boat termed "The Hungarian," was subsequently hired on it as assistant carpenter, and made the first trip in it down to Memphis, Tennessee. At this place he sought work, but failed in finding it on account of the dullness of trade. Spending a few days there he took passage in the "Constitution" up the Mississippi to St. Louis, where he found employment without much effort. On the 3d of March, 1851, he returned to Brookville, and formed a partnership with a man named Templeton in the building business, which continued about five years. He removed to Franklin, PA, in 1861, and engaged in his trade there.
He had three children with his first wife and three with his second.
He put up some of the neatest buildings in the city of Franklin, among which were found the Court House, Presbyterian church, Exchange hotel, and many private residences. [HVC 1879, 489]
