He received his educa­tion in the schools of the island, and at Mt. Union College, Ohio. He worked with his father until 1873, when he started for him­self. When his father died he left two pieces of land on the island to Samuel and his brother, William H., Samuel taking a place of fourteen acres, where he erected a fine house in 1885, drawing the plans and arrang­ing the details himself.
He was a republican, and held all the various offices of his township.
