He was educated at New Wilmington College; taught school at Grove City; studied for the ministry at the Theological Seminary of Allegheny City, and preached five years in the Allegheny Presbytery.

Civil War: He enlisted in Company I, Sixty-fourth Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, and served about one year.
