He and his twin brother DeWitt were delivered by their father when he was practicing medicine in the town of Liscomb, IA. Both boys lived with their grandfather and grandmother in Nickleville, PA, for several years after the death of their father. During this period their mother, Adele, attended Normal school in Iowa, so that she could further her teaching career by obtaining a 1st class certificate. They went back to Iowa when they were about 7 years of age. After graduating from high school he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. While working there as a bookkeeper he met and married Maimie Bridwell in 1902. She was a Mormon and he later joined the church. After their marriage he and his wife moved to Inglewood, California, and went into business with his twin brother DeWitt. They owned and operated a laundry together for awhile, then DeSoto bought his brother's share and continued with the laundry business for many years. He out-lived his wife by several years. In the last few years of his life he became blind, from glaucoma. He died leaving no survivors other than his twin brother, DeWitt.
