General Notes: Husband - Charles Chase

He spent an eventful life of ninety-six years in and about Russell and Warren, Pennsylvania, and being possessed of a remarkable memory and facility of expression, held his hearers spellbound with fascinating accounts of the hap-penings during a period which probably embraced more tremendous changes than any other period of like extent in history. Charles Chase, after living in Warren for many years after 1894, returned to his old home in Russell, where he died, while still in full possession of his faculties, mourned by all as the "Grand Old Man of Warren County."

From 1849 to 1891 he was a pilot of huge lumber pine rafts on the rivers from the headwaters of the Conewango via the Allegheny and Ohio to Louisville, Kentucky.

The house in which he first saw the light was a typical pioneer's dwelling, built of logs, and standing in the midst of a newly cleared farm. At the age of sixteen he entered upon the active business of life, lumbering and rafting on the river at Louisville, Kentucky; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and other points. He was for many years an expert river pilot, and from 1872 until 1890, when he made his last trip, rafted, and sold timber for L. F. Watson, afterward buying and selling on commission. On retiring from the river he took charge of the Watson estate, of which he was the manager. He had considerable interests in both oil and gas.
During the civil war Mr. Chase was among those drafted, but the war closed before he could be enrolled and enter upon his term of service. In 1893 the family came to reside in Warren. In politics he was a Democrat and served as jury commissioner. He was an active member of Warren Lodge, No. 339, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and belonged to the Conewango Club and the Fishing Club. His family attended the Methodist Episcopal church.
