He was educated in the common schools and at the Salem (Delmont) academy, and then devoted his attention to agriculture, in which he was very success-ful, coming to own a great deal of valuable real estate on which he put many costly im-provements. He was a republican in political principle but never aspired to office, and with his wife belonged to the Reformed church in which he held the office of deacon and elder. Much of his time was spent in his library, one of the essentials of the home, and the whole family was pervaded with the spirit of improvement and progress.
