General Notes: Husband - Allen T. Britton

He received a common school education and early in life began to work at the carpenter's and joiner's trade, at which he continued until he earned the money to make a payment on a farm, when he turned his attention to agricultural pursuits and eventually became one of the substantial as well as practical farmers of Randolph Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and also became quite an extensive stock grower. He was but two years of age when his parents moved to Crawford County and located in South Shenango Township, where his early life was employed in assisting on the home farm, and in attending the common schools of the neighborhood.

He moved with his family to Randolph Township, Crawford County, in 1859, and his farm soon became one of the best regulated in the country. He enlisted in Company A., Two Hundred and Eleventh Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and during service contracted a disease which eventually ended his life, and his loss fell heavily upon the neighborhood as well as his family. After the death of her husband the farm was successfully carried on by Mrs. Britton with the assistance of her children.

He was born at Guys Mills, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where he followed farming throughout his active years. He served in the Union army throughout the period of the Civil war, and was always a stanch Republican on political issues. In religion he was a Methodist. [HVC 1919, 1055]

He and his wife were born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, where they were also married. He learned the carpenter's trade when a young man and moved to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in the early fifties, and settled one mile east of Guy's Mills on a farm. He served during the Civil War in the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, after which he returned to his farm, where he followed agricultural pursuits until his death. He was a stanch Republican and held many township offices, among them being justice of the peace and school director. [HBC 1927, 1202]

He and his wife were the parents of ten sons and five daughters. Some of the names given are likely duplicates but given differently in different lists.
