General Notes: Husband - Adam Brown, Sr.

In 1804 he bought a “settler’s right” to a tract of 400 acres in Forward Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and moved to it with his family from Cumberland County. He served in the War of 1812.
He was from Big Springs, near Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He removed to Butler County about the year 1810, and became the owner of large tracts of land, and erected mills near the present village of Brownsdale. He died, leaving his widow and minor children in possession of his large estate.

He was a native of Germany but very quickly mastered the English language. Prior to the Revolu­tionary War, he built the first wharves in Baltimore, his father being the contractor for the work. He came into possession of the 400 acres of land which his father had purchased at what is now Brownsdale, Butler County, PA, and settled there in the woods. The town was not laid out until many years later. He continued to reside on that place until his death. [TCHBC, 973]

He came to Butler county, PA, in the last decade of the Eighteenth century, and located in what is now Middlesex township. He subsequently settled upon a 400-acre tract of land near the site of Brownsdale, which he cleared and improved. He was one of the early constables of the county, and in politics, he was an adherent of the Whig party. He was a Presbyterian in religion, a man of fair education, in both English and German, and wielded considerable influence among the pio­neers.
Both he and his wife died in the early 1800s.
