He was educated at the common schools and then taught school for three terms. He graduated from Marietta College in 1875, and that year came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the manager of a commission house, and remained with it for fourteen years. In 1893 he engaged in business for himself as a merchandise broker. He was a member of Grace Presbyterian church, and was made an elder in 1906.
