General Notes: Husband - Patrick McKinney

He was a native of Ireland, and emigrated to New York in 1792. He settled and married in New Jersey.

He was born in the north of Ireland, but was of Scotch descent. There is a curious family tradition as to the manner in which this gentleman set sail for America, and the circumstances which prompted his removal to this country. In order to escape a military draft, he became a stowaway on a sailing vessel, whose destination was America, and won the favor of the sailors, who supplied him with the means of subsistence. After three days of the voyage had been passed he made his appearance on deck, to the great indignation of the captain, who threatened to return him. But Patrick, being musically inclined and the possessor of a fine voice, and holding fraternal ties with the captain, won that officer's friendship to such an extent that, rather than deliver him up to the authorities, he connived with him to effect his escape. Landing in New Jersey, Patrick took up the occupation of a farmer and bought some land. He formed a matrimonial alliance there and became the parent of three children. [BOB37JD, 511]
