He was born in England, and came to Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1640, with his wife Sarah.

Of the descendants of Joseph Bemis the records show that more than 100 served in the American Revolution. One of his descendants was Elias Howe, whose mother was a Bemis and who also married a Bemis, was the inventor of the sewing machine.
