He was born in Hopewell township, Washington County, PA, passing his boyhood on the farm, where he received a common-school educa­tion. He afterward attended the Commercial Col­lege at Pittsburgh, and then returning to the old homestead, engaged in farming. Immediately after marriage he and his wife settled on a farm which was situated two and a half miles southeast of West Middletown. He made many improvements on the place, and erected a handsome two-story mod­ern dwelling, a large barn and other buildings. He de­voted his principal attention to wool growing and stock raising; in politics he was a Republican, but confined his political work to the ballot. Mr. and Mrs. Brownlee were members of the United Presby­terian Church in West Middletown.
