He spent one year at Canonsburg Academy, also a year at Bethany College. He left school at the age of nineteen years, and commenced farming in partnership with his brother, remaining in Independence township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, until 1887. In that year he moved to a home, situated two miles northeast of West Middletown. He devoted his principal attention to raising Spanish Merino sheep, also raising horses and cultivating 131 acres of land. He voted the Democratic ticket, and was inspector of elections for several years. In religious faith he and his wife were members of the Lower Buffalo Presbyterian Church.
