General Notes: Wife - Sarah L. [Unk]

She has a government marble at her grave with only the words, "Sarah Henderson, Army Nurse" on it. An account of the marking of Sarah's grave is as follows: "The stone was procured by the C. A. boys but was not placed at her grave for some unknown reason. After World War I, the stone was discovered in an old building that was being wrecked. It came to the attention of the American Legion at McGregor, Iowa. This organization located her grave and placed the marker in 1938. The Commandant of the Iowa Soldiers Home at Marshalltown furnished the following information concerning her: "She was born in Ohio April 20, 1820, and enlisted in the Army as a nurse on April 25, 1862. She was discharged April 25, 1863. On September 29, 1905, she was admitted to the Iowa Soldiers' Home and died there November 19, 1905. Her body was shipped to Luana, Iowa, for burial."
Additional information concerning Sarah was obtained from the Adjutant General of Iowa, as follows: "Only information found of Sarah Henderson, Army Nurse, was in the Historical Library (Des Moines) which states that she served as Army Nurse in St. Louis, Missouri, and Memphis, Tennessee, and that she was buried at Luana, Iowa, in the Lutheran Cemetery, and that she died November 27, 1905, at the age of 80 years. (There is a discrepancy in the above statements concerning Sarah's age and time of death, but the Hospital record is, no doubt, the correct one.-Ed.)
