General Notes: Husband - Joseph Winger

He resided in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on the old William Penn road, within a mile of what was known as the "Old Compass Tavern." He was a farmer, and removed with his family and settled in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, in 1838, where, besides his farming interests, he carried on a general store. He was also postmaster, keeping the office in his store at Clay Lick.

The evening of October 10, 1862, rebel Gen. Stuart, with 2,000 picked Virginia cavalrymen, made his raid on Chambersburg. Joseph Winger, the postmaster at Clay Lick, had been taken prisoner by Stuart, and while at Chambersburg was on parole; and although urged by his son and others to escape, would not violate his parole, and so was taken South and confined in Libby Prison some two months.

He and his wife had sixteen children, and of this family three died in infancy and one at the age of seventeen; eleven were married and had families, and one remained single. Eleven of the family were still living in 1887.
