He was born above Youngstown, Unity township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he attended the subscription schools. Until reaching manhood he assisted his father on the homestead, and then purchased fifty-four acres of the Thomas Smith farm, in Ligonier township. The land was a wilderness, but he cleared almost the whole and erected all the necessary buildings. Thereafter he led the life of a general farmer and stock-raiser. He was a Republican, and a trustee of the United Presbyterian church of Ligonier.
