General Notes: Husband - Samuel Butler

He was raised on a farm, attended the public schools, and afterwards the Unionville Academy. He subsequently taught school eight years in Chester, Berks, and Butler Counties, Pennsylvania, and then resumed farming. His farm was a part of the old Phipps homestead and purchase. In 1876 he was elected to the Lower House of the Legislature, re-elected in 1878, and in 1879 was unanimously nominated by the State Republican Convention for State treasurer, and at the October election elected by 58,000 majority,-the largest given to any candidate of his party on the State ticket since war times.
