General Notes: Husband - John H. Trescher

He was reared on his father's farm and attended the public schools of that section. He also attended the State Normal University of Illinois, and subsequently graduated from the Iron City Business College, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He first embarked in business at Irwin, Pennsylvania, selecting mercantile life, and was successful. In the autumn of 1888 he visited Jeannette, then in the beginning of its career. He saw it as a coming winner, and in the following spring he started into the real estate business at that place. He also established the Dispatch and began a newspaper career.
He traveled extensively. He annually took long trips, and visited nearly every state in the Union. In 1881 he visited the Great West and spent a year among its people. In 1898 he visited the West Indies. In 1900 his aged mother, for whom he always showed the greatest devotion, expressing a desire to visit her native land, he persuaded her to accompany him and together they made a trip to the Continent. In 1905 he visited the Pacific coast, and his route of travel covered twenty-seven states.
John H. Trescher came to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, saw the opportunities its busy life afforded, and seized the ebbing tide. He embarked in business at Irwin, and although competition was strong, he succeeded. His newspaper venture was successful, and the Jeannette Dispatch, became one of the best and most widely circulated newspapers in the county. He drifted into politics, and set his ambition on the office of sheriff, the most important and most lucrative in the county. He was nominated and elected, and served his term of three years. During his term, although he had over five thousand prisoners in his charge, not a single one escaped, and he executed two murderers. Retiring from the office in 1905, he returned to Jeannette and the newspaper business.
He was the owner of the Grand Hotel at Monessen, Pennsylvania, which was easily the finest hotel building in the county, and also owned a large business block at the same place. His devotion to business is only exceeded by his devotion to his family. In politics he was an ardent Republican.
