General Notes: Husband - Arthur Eugene Rice

He spent his boyhood on his father's farm, attended the common schools of Freehold township, Warren County, Pennsylvania, and Sugargrove Union School, and learned the trade of carpenter with his father. He taught school for a period of three years, being thoroughly qualified for that vocation. From 1879 to 1898 he was an oil well worker, at first engaged in rig building and later conducting general lease work, and in the latter named year he returned to the homestead farm in Freehold township, which he cultivated and managed until 1906, when he took up residence in Sugargrove borough. He became actively interested in oil producing in the Indiana oil fields, from which he derived a lucrative income, and in addition to this was serving in the capacity of assistant postmaster of Sugar Grove, having been appointed in 1909. He held the office of assessor of Sugar Grove for three years, and borough councilman four years, having been elected on the Republican ticket. He was a member of the United Brethren in Christ church, in the affairs of which he took an active part. He was made a Mason in Olean, New York, and became a member of Stillwater Lodge at Sugar Grove, having held the office of senior warden and master in that order; he was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Lottsville, serving as secretary, trustee and noble grand, and was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
