He was born and reared on the family farm, which he later came to own: all the original tract purchased by his grandfather, with an addition of ninety acres. He was educated at the public schools and at Bethel Academy, and always followed farming.
He was assessor of the township; was a prohibitionist, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church, of which he was trustee for a number of years.
