General Notes: Husband - Joseph E. Callahan

He received his early education in the district schools of his home neighborhood until he was about nineteen years of age, and afterward completed two terms at Jamestown Seminary and three terms at Sheakleyville Normal Academy. He was a leading Democrat and public man of affairs. He served as assessor, as justice of the peace, and in 1900 and 1902 was a candidate for the state legislature, receiving nomination both times and being defeated by a small majority. In 1908 he was a formidable candidate for county commissioner and received a large majority over his opponents. As he was a Democrat and the county of Mercer was a Republican county, this shows the popularity of Mr. Callahan. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder for over sixteen years. [HMC 1909, 697]
