He attended school in South Beaver township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, later teaching for a number of years. He attended a dental school in Indianapolis, Indiana, and graduated in dentistry Apr. 30, 1901. He practised dentistry in East Liverpool, Ohio, until his health compelled him to give up his work.
