General Notes: Husband - John Lowrie

He immigrated in 1792. The family first located in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, but after residing there only a few years, removed to Allegheny Township, Butler County, being among the earliest settlers. John Lowrie owned a farm and a grist and saw mill, and was a prosperous pioneer. [HBC 1883, 172]

One of the first settlers [of Allegheny Twp, Butler Co, PA] was John Lowrie, a Scotch Presbyterian who took up a tract adjacent to the Allegheny River. At Poplar Bottom, a point which is on the land formerly owned by him, are now the corners of four counties. John Lowrie led the pure and simple life of men of his class, and after many years' residence there, died at the home of his daughter, on Slippery Rock, aged and respected. [HBC 1883, 445]

He opened the first store in the northern part of Butler County. He was keeping store on his farm in 1814, and probably established the business some years before that date. [HBC 1883, 446]

He died when almost one hundred years old.

John Lowrie and family in the year 1792 immigrated to the United States from Edinburgh, Scotland, where he had been engaged in the bank-ing business. They first located in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, but shortly afterward removed to the border of Venango and Butler counties, where they made their permanent home. They were intensely Presbyterian, and he was for many years a prominent figure in the Scrubgrass Presbyterian church. [HVC 1890, 965]

They came to the United States in 1792 and settled in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, whence they removed to what is now Allegheny township, Butler County, in 1797. Here they spent the remaining years of their lives. He owned a farm and a grist and saw mill, and was one of the prosperous citizens of the county. He was among the founders of Scrubgrass Presbyterian church in Venango County, and a man of sturdy character, excellent moral traits and high mental qualities. After clearing up and living upon his farm for about forty years, he there died, and was buried in Scrubgrass Presbyterian cemetery.
