General Notes: Husband - James Campbell

He came to Mercer County, PA, from County Antrim, Ireland, in 1798, and at first made his dwelling place a cave in what afterward became known as Seminary Hill. When he first became a settler in this primitive fashion he purchased a tract of four hundred acres at a dollar and a quarter an acre, afterward erected a small log house, and at his death left one hundred acres to each of his four sons. The senior James Campbell, between the years of 1815 and 1817, also purchased a forty-acre tract on the Shenango River, which included a mill site and abundant water privileges. Upon this site his sons, John and James Campbell, Jr., built a mill of hewn logs, a little above the site of the Brackin and Carr mill. The farmers for miles around brought their grain to this crude plant, which continued in operation from 1817 to 1856. Soon after the mill was started a crude shanty of logs was erected near it for the accommodation of the hands, which served as temporary shelter for them for some time. It was afterward occupied by James Campbell, Jr. as a family residence. In 1856 a larger and better grist-mill was erected on the site of the old, which continued its useful work until it was burned to the ground, May 3, 1886. This pioneer concern was the first industry born in Jamestown, becoming the father of a numerous offspring in the manufacturing line. Thus the Campbell family in a most positive sense is the founder of Jamestown.
