General Notes: Husband - John Carner, Sr.


He was born in Northumberland County, PA, but when yet a child his parents moved to Union County, where he grew to manhood. In 1819 he moved to Center county, where he resided till in March, 1827, when he concluded to try his fortune in Venango County. He settled in West Rockland and bought a tract of 79 acres of land from the Bingham heirs, at $1.25 per acre, cutting cord-wood for 31 cents per cord to pay for it. He afterward purchased 43 acres more. During the summer he worked on his farm, and during the winter chopped wood. He was married in Union County, and reared a family of nine children, six sons and three daughters, of which five sons and two daughters are still living. In 1871 he sold his farm to Martin & Co., oil operators, for twenty thousand dollars, to be paid in payments, but before the sale was completed he took sick and died. The heirs, to avoid litigation, took $17,500 in cash. [HVC 1879, 639]

Snyder book (quoting Carner book) states they were buried in Rockland Cemetery.
