General Notes: Husband - Millard Filmore Scholl

He received a common school education and began to learn the carpenter trade in 1868 at Irwin, Pennsylvania, ten years later he went to West Newton, where he engaged in the planing mill and lumber business and was also a contractor and builder. He was a republican, took an active part in political matters and held the office of councilman in his borough.

He attended the local public schools. The first few years of his business life were spent in the oil region near Franklin, Pennsylvania. Then, in 1878, he went into the lumber business under his own name at West Newton, and continued to manage a prosperous business of his own until 1925, in which year he took his son Jasper into partnership with him. The concern did a substantial business in retail lumber, building supplies, and contracting and building. It was the oldest firm of the kind in that part of Westmoreland County, and was responsible for many of the more important buildings of the community. In its yards fifteen or more employes were constantly at work, and operations were conducted over a radius of about fifteen miles. In addition to his immediate business interests, Mr. Scholl was a director of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of West Newton. He was affiliated with the Republican Party and took an active part in politics, having served on the Board of Trade, School Board and Council. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce.
