He was born near Washington, Pennsylvania, and received a limited education in the schools of Mt. Pleasant township, commencing to work on the farm when but ten years of age. After his marriage he bought a farm where his son later resided, which contained 220 acres, and devoted his time to its cultivation and improvement.
